You Paid For Your Website. Sorry, But You Don’t Own It!
So Who Does Own Your Website?
Here at ESPRESSO.digital the conversation about website ownership comes up once in a while. Usually a client will ask if they own the website once we finish designing and developing it. And it always comes as a surprise (or shock) to them when we tell them that they actually don’t own their business website, or at least not all of it. As you can already tell, website ownership is a bit complicated!
You see, there are a lot of different components that make up a modern mobile-first online presence. Many of our clients focus on the actual website design, and the text and images that are part of that. Starting with the web server and data center where your website is hosted and all the way to your actual website domain there are lots of things that you don’t own, or have any control over.
This topic can quickly get very confusing, and we could write on and on about website ownership, and most of you would still be confused. So instead we wanted to share this cool infographic from our friends at Red Website Design. It covers everything a business owner needs to know about website ownership.

Final Thoughts on Website Ownership
While you technically don’t own your business website that fact should not keep you awake at night. As you can see from the above infographic you do have the right to the visual design, and you own any text or visual content such as images or videos that you created yourself. In all the years that the highly caffeinated agency designed and developed websites for our global clients we never had any problems in regard who owns a business website.
But we do understand that some business owners are very concerned about website ownership. We actually spell that out in plain English in all of our web design contracts. If website ownership is something you are worried or concerned about ask your web designer or agency to do the same. Even if they don’t your rights of ownership are covered by US and foreign laws.
