Well, maybe not famous. But they can definitely get your blog post found by search engines. Many blog posts are invisible to search engines like Google and Bing. Our blog post SEO tips will fix that!
Our blog post SEO tips are based on real life experiences writing our own blog. To help you follow along I am actually using this very post as an example. It doesn’t matter if you are posting on your own personal blog, writing expert articles based on a skill or interest you have, or deploying content as part of a business marketing campaign. Follow these practices and get ready to be famous!
Simple Blog Post SEO Tips
For this post you need to have at least an idea of your topic. If you are still unsure you may want to start by reading our post on essential ingredients of an effective blog post here. If you have an idea keep reading. And here is a shout-out to Barbara and Carolyn at Y5 Ventures; they asked me to write this post to show people how to actually implement these blog post SEO tips. I wrote about this topic before, but no examples.
No getting around it folks; it all starts here. In order for search engines to even glance at your post you better have a minimum of 300-500 words! Since Google bots don’t count every word better think 350+. And speaking of Google, they actually favor long content, as in 1,200+ words. For those of you interested, this post has 1659 words.
That much content can be overwhelming. Our team suggests:
- Make your content easy to “scan” or “skim”
- Use small paragraphs
- Use an easy to read font, and make the font size at least 16px
- Use bold and italics to draw attention where it’s needed
- Use headings, sections, lists, charts, and images to visually break up your content
As you can see this approach works very well for our own blog posts. What do you think?
Next in our blog post SEO tips are your keywords. Google requires you to have a unique keyword or long-tail key phrase for each post. And you want to be careful as you can only use each keyword or phrase once per site! Yup, your entire website or blog.
Blog post search engine optimization can include a focal set of keywords to be used throughout the page. Use them in different forms such as synonyms, tenses, or related words for maximum effectiveness. Our keywords are “blog post SEO tips.” How many times can you find them?
Your title has to appeal to both search engines and your human readers. A great title catches the reader’s eye and tells both humans and bots what the post is all about.
Keep your title between 50-70 characters in length. Make sure it includes your keyword or phrase. Play around a little and see what fits best. Our own “Blog Post SEO Tips that Work” took a little while.
This is where things get a little tricky. The Meta description tells search engines what your post is about. It needs to include your keyword or phrase, and not have more than 150-160 characters.
It is also visible in your search results. Be sure to include info like your phone number and a call to action (CTA) for your human visitors. That is not easy all within 160 characters!
Here is the meta description from this post: “ESPRESSO.digital lists easy blog post SEO tips that work. Call 206-264-2438 for help implementing these blog post SEO tips and get your blog posts found.”
Search engine optimization for blog posts has to include the use of H1-H6 headlines. I’ll be honest, I hardly ever get beyond H3. I am not even sure what H6 looks like on our own site. But you do have to use headlines for both human and robot visitors.
Your blog post title automatically becomes your H1 tag. Do not use another H1 tag on your post! Use 2-4 H2 tags to identify major sections, with H3 and H4 tags as needed.
It is beneficial to use your keyword or phrase as part of your headlines, especially at the beginning. But this is not a definite requirement! The key phrase appears in three out of the four H2 headlines in this post. But it sounded fake to include the key phrase in every H3 subtitle on this post.
Another simple, yet effective blog post SEO tip is to link to other content on your website or blog at least once. You can link to other pages, posts, or anything else on your site. For best results liberally sprinkle links all over, about once per 125 words.
And a special tip for reading this long: Once you publish a new post go back to some of your old ones and add a link to the new content. Not only will it help your new post gain traction faster, search engines will detect that your old posts have ‘new content’ as well.
It is absolutely essential for any kind of blog post SEO to have at least one image. This can be both the title and featured image if need be. More images are always better.
Be sure each image includes your keyword or phrase in the file name as well as the Alt tag (the text that shows if the image can not be displayed.) Note: If your image contains any text that text needs to be spelled out in both the Alt tag and the image description.
Our own images have file names like “ESPRESSO.digital-blog-post-SEO-tips-that-work-title-image.jpg” Here is a little hint for you; if you include your business name it will show up in search as well! For simplicity we use the file name as the Alt tag in many cases.
Categories and Tags
Don’t forget to add your post to at least one category on your blog. This helps both search engines and your readers to identify your content. If you don’t have any categories yet create some! This post is categorized under blogging, SEO, and tips and tricks.
Tags are the little hashtags you see on many blog posts. They help identify topics and content to readers and search engines. Your first tag should always be your keyword or phrase. Choose others to outline your blog post content. Here are the tags from this post: “B2B business blogging, blog post SEO tips, blog posts, on-page seo, on-page SEO checklist for blogs, search engine optimization, search engines, SEO, seo tips”
