Creating Effective Social Media Marketing Strategies
Time to Start Thinking about Your Social Media Marketing Strategies!
“But we don’t want to think about our social media marketing strategies, yet!” Yes, I know it is hard to think about holiday marketing with September just starting. But you know how time flies! Summer will be a distant memory before you know it. And that means you need to start thinking about your holiday marketing campaigns.
To get you in a holiday mood we will be sharing some holiday marketing tips and trends with you over the coming weeks. And since social media is such an important part of holiday marketing I wanted to get you thinking about your social media marketing strategies.
If you haven’t looked at your social media marketing strategies recently you should do so. It is easy to forget about some of the unwritten rules we all should follow. And if you are new to social media marketing you may not even be aware of them. And that can get you in to trouble without you even trying. The last thing you want to do during the competitive holiday season is to have ineffective social media marketing strategies.
To help you avoid social media missteps during your holiday marketing (or any other time) here are some basic tips you can use to create more effective social media marketing strategies for your business or brand. Let’s get started, and have some fun!
Essential Tips for Creating Social Media Marketing Strategies
There Are No Shortcuts!
Sorry, but I have to burst your bubble right up front. You can thank me later! Creating more effective social media marketing strategies takes a lot of time, energy, and creativity. It is an unavoidable part of effective social media marketing. No matter how you try you will not be able to avoid it. Trust me!
You Need to Contribute!
I keep telling our clients that social media marketing is like having a conversation. If you can’t contribute something that is of value to your community why should people listen to you? This is a conversation. Don’t just stand there; say something!
Become an Expert!
Effective social media marketing strategies are based on the ability to provide value to your audience. That can be a downloadable white paper, a link to a webinar, or actionable advice on your social channels. Just be sure to know what you are talking about. If you have to bone up on some skills or knowledge, do so. No one will listen to you otherwise!
Have Meaningful Conversations!
There is a big difference between adding something of value to a conversation, as opposed to just saying something. If you are not saying something meaningful you are better off keeping quiet. If all you are doing is adding to the digital noise you are bound to be ignored. And that’s not good if you are trying to create effective social media marketing strategies!
Being active on social channels is an essential part of developing effective social media marketing strategies. But there is a big difference between being active and being productive. A few posts that relate to your business and audience are better than a stream of irrelevant posts. Remember, if you add to the digital noise you will simply be ignored.
As I like to say: Keep it simple! It just works best! Offer concise information, actionable advice, tips and tricks to your audience instead of boring them with endless details. Everyone is busy. Don’t waste precious time for your audience. They will not be around long if you do!
Social media is not about you. It is about everyone else! If your social media marketing strategies consist of shameless self-promotion they are bound to fail. If you constantly have to attract attention to your brand you are not accomplishing anything. Plus, if you come across as that needy nobody will like you.
Keep it Real!
Be authentic, as in being yourself! Drawing on your own experience, knowledge, style and humor you are much more likely to build an audience. This is the digital age. People will spot an impostor, and that will be the end of your social media marketing strategies.
Keep the Conversation Open!
Nobody wants to hear you talk all the time. You need to give your followers, circles and fans a chance to contribute to the conversation. If you are the only one talking it becomes that dreadful boring 8am on Mondays lecture; you know the one! And that is much less effective than a lively conversation.
Don’t be Disruptive!
Just because somebody liked or followed you doesn’t give you the right to constantly interrupt and pester them. What are you, some slimy telemarketer? If you want your social media marketing strategies to be effective you need to take the time to build trust and relationships.
Don’t Compromise Quality!
Just because you have fans and followers does not mean they actually have to listen to you. Don’t let your initial enthusiasm for sharing with them lead to publishing low quality content. Keeping all your content engaging and high quality is an essential tip for creating effective social media marketing strategies.
Social media trends change rapidly, sometimes several times a day. Your social media marketing strategies need to adapt accordingly. You must stay up with current topics and trends in your industry so you can incorporate them in your marketing.
Measure and Analyze!
Social media marketing is not posting on Facebook; it is actual hard work. Nobody really does it for fun. So if your social media marketing strategies are not leading to more conversions, leads, sales, or other measure of productivity they are pretty much pointless, aren’t they? Better measure and analyze your efforts and adjust as needed!
Engaging strictly for engagement’s sake is pretty pointless. Instead your social media marketing strategies should focus on enrichment. Provide your audience with something of real value, something that enriches their experience. They will remember that much longer.
In case you haven’t noticed, the world-wide interweb is full of visual content. If a picture is worth a thousand words a video is probably worth a million. So don’t just tell your audience, show them instead!
Your social media marketing strategies will not be very effective if you do not follow-up with new fans and followers. Remember, this is like meeting someone at a party, getting their number, and never calling them back. Make the people who make an effort to reach out to you feel special by following up with them. That’s just plain good manners!
The world-wide interweb is pretty crowded. And sometimes even your fans and followers will not be polite. Maybe they hated your last post or disagree with your views. It doesn’t matter if you agree or not; you still have to let them speak their mind. After that you can respond in an appropriate manner. But no name calling, you hear!
You may have heard this from me before, and you will hear it again now. Even the most effective social media marketing strategies do not provide instant results! Therefore it is essential that you do not give up after a short time. Be patient and allow your social media marketing strategies to provide the results you need.
Don’t Be Obsessive!
When you a first starting out creating your own social media marketing strategies there is an urge to join as many groups and circles as you can. My advice is very simple, don’t! Following too many groups will only hinder your marketing efforts. Spreading yourself too thin is only going to harm your social media marketing strategies. Keep it simple and limit group participation.
Don;t tell me that you are creating social media marketing strategies so you don’t have to blog. It doesn’t work that way! Most social media marketers maintain blogs to increase reach and engagement. If you plan to be active on social media you really need to blog regularly as well. And creating an effective blog post is easier than you think!
Yup, I know I said nobody does social media marketing for fun. But that does not mean you should not have fun creating and executing your social media marketing strategies. As a matter of fact, if you are not having fun doing it you are not doing it right! Any social interaction has to be both fun and purposeful to be effective.
Creating Your Own Social Media Marketing Strategies!
Now you understand the basic rules of effective social media marketing strategies. Use these tips and follow them as you either adjust existing or create new social media marketing strategies for your own business or brand.
How much you have to do, and how much you actually feel like doing yourself is entirely up to you. Some of you may already be gearing up for your own holiday marketing. Maybe some minor adjustments are all that will be need in your case.
If you are just beginning to develop your social media marketing strategies it may take you a bit longer. At least you will not have to correct any previous errors or mistakes. You will have to start by establishing a following, connecting with your fans, and building an online presence.
Don’t rush this! Instead, get started now and leave yourself enough time to build a loyal audience well before you start any major social media marketing strategies. Remember, you want committed brand advocates instead of simply having the most ‘likes’ on Facebook.
Keep your eyes open for sudden social media marketing opportunities. Create a unique marketing hashtag for your business, and start following related tags. Feel free to chime in if the content relates to you.
